The Lady Dragon Cross Country team earned an appropriate color Monday at the UIL Region 1-6A Cross Country meet in Lubbock. A SILVER - why is the silver an appropriate color? Because it is their silver anniversary of qualifying for UIL State Cross Country Meets. For the 25th consecutive year the Lady Dragons will be headed to Old Settler's Park in Round Rock. Every year since 1996 the Lady Dragons have earned a state qualification - two generations of runners have built this legacy. The Lady Dragons were led by Senior Kaylie Cox who finished in 9th with a time of 18:45. Junior Ava Bushaw was right behind here in 10th place with a time of 18:58 and sophomore Syliva Schwedler was in 13th at 19:15.
The Dragons also had a fine day in Lubbock winning the Region 1-6A meet for the 4th consecutive year. The Dragons will be making the trip to Round Rock for the 12th consecutive year - or every year since the current senior class has been in Kindergarten. The Dragons will be aiming for their third consecutive team state title. On this rare Monday meet the boys were led by junior David Fisher in 6th at 15:55. Junior Robert Freeman finished 9th in 16:03 and junior Tyler Ortiz finished 18th at 16:19.
Coach Justin Leonard commented on the both team's fine day of work saying "I'm really proud of our young men and women...we'll see some of these teams again at the state meet. The boys are excited to have the opportunity to defend their state championship, and the girls want to improve on their second-place finish from a year ago.
The UIL State Meet is Nov. 6th.
