Carroll Athletics is proud to announce today the hiring of Jason Tanaka as the fifth Volleyball Head Coach in program history. Coach Tanaka is a graduate of the University of Arizona. He has helped lead four teams, SMU, TCU, Baylor and Arizona, to the NCAA tournament. While at SMU his teams won two American Athletic Conference championships. Coach Tanaka comes to Carroll from the college ranks, having most recently served as an assistant at SMU where he was intricately involved in all aspects of the program.

Coach Tanaka has served as an elite recruiter while also being involved in player development. Before his time at SMU Coach Tanaka was on the other side of the Golden Skillet rivalry, serving for 13 years as the associate head coach for TCU women’s volleyball.

This up-coming season will be Coach Tanaka’s 32nd on the sidelines including 25 at the college level. Coach Tanaka has served for many years at the youth level, working for Texas Advantage Volleyball and USA Volleyball. There he led the A1 Select team to a silver medal as head coach in 2007 and was on the staff that led the 2012 A2 BIP program to a bronze medal in the Global Challenge.

During his time in the college ranks, Coach Tanaka led players to new heights, including at least 20 student-athletes to all-conference accolades. Multiple athletes have gained individual honors – three Setters of the Year, two Freshman of the Year, and one Conference Player of the Year. And another three reached the highest individual honor a college volleyball player can achieve, being named AVCA All-American.

With all his vast experience at the collegiate level, and internationally, the 2022 season will be his first leading a high school squad. Coach Tanaka states “I am very excited to be here in Southlake at the high school level. My wife, Zachia Choe, and I are looking forward to this new challenge.” CISD welcomes Jason Tanaka to our family.
